I have had an intermittent issue with the auto focus on my d, which I have been unable to fix despite getting lots of advice online including this forum, and having the camera inspected and professionally cleaned at Henry's, our local and excellent camera store. It is under an extended warranty so after being completely unable to focus on a South polar skua which was flying right over our boat a week ago on a pelagic trip while listening to everybody else clicking and subsequently seeing their wonderful in focus photos, I bit the bullet and took it into Henry's who have sent it off to Nikon Canada.
They told me it would take four or five weeks and that they simply put it on a computer to see if all the electricals etc. And if they find a problem they just take out and replace most of the innards. Meanwhile I'm stuck using my old d with my wonderful new PF lens, but it is at least adequate. DaleJr said:. Whiskeyman said:. Only one camera body? How can that be?
Just kidding! Although, if you use your camera a lot, you might want to look for a used body online. Some can be purchased for a low price and will keep you in the game if your primary camera stops working while you're out. OTOH, you don't have the extra weight to carry around! Neil H. Active member. Our nearest Nikon repair shop has a very good reputation.
However they were shut twice by Covid lock-downs and had my camera for 2 months. The eventual repair by the Nikon approved shop was top notch. If the repair requires an un-common part that is out of stock it could be quite a long wait.
The shop will have to assess the camera before they know what is required for the repair. Warren D Well-known member. A few weeks ago my EFL took about 2 weeks. Sent to NY. Be sure to fill out the on-line form, speeds up the process. How did you guys pack up your cameras? I have used Nikon service centers in both California and more recently New York for lens repairs, warranty and non warranty. All my experiences have been very positive.
Start the process by using NikonUSA website, fill out the form and wait for instructions. Only delays were from lack of parts, and Nikon notified me of that up front. The better you pack it the better packing will be used when they return it to you. Longer if there is a parts needed issue.
In that case I sent the lens in anyhow. MYount Active member. I sent my in to them because at anything above mm The continuous focus was acting like it was on single shot mode so I couldn't get it to stay on focus. It happened instantly. No slowdown or anything like that. It did the same thing on both of my camera bodies. It took about 10 days to go both ways and get repaired. It actually focuses, in my opinion, better than it did when I received it brand new.
I always felt that it was never the stellar lens that it was claimed to be. It seems to be now. It was about 13 months old. They never gave me any explanation of what was actually wrong with it.
If car dealers could require you to get serviced only at dealers they would but AFAIK that is not legal. So far Nikon refuses to work on grey market cameras, stopped selling parts to repair shops and now deauthorized the indie shops. Next may be stopping service on out of warranty products. Well cars have become essential that's why government stepped in unlike cameras which definitely not a necessity. Not sure with US law I don't live there , but for sure there are some sort of consumer protection program.
Maybe Nikon is shrinking their network of repair centers in response to slumping dSLR sales? This sounds like a smart business decision to me. I've never had any issues shipping my equipment to their Melville, NY center and getting it back in a timely manner. Just my 2 cents. It's 15 service centers, not hundreds. Also, don't you live in NYC, like 10 miles from Melville? We live in a world with increasingly sophisticated and inexpensive shipping options. It's not just an issue of shipping speeds.
There are a lot of anecdotes out there from pros who say that the Nikon centers' turnaround times are often slower. The shipping time is not the question, how will they handle the work from the 15 shops that are not doing Nikon work anymore? Most professionals that use Nikon, like myself also have and use NPS. I've never used any outside authorized repair places, ever in 18 years as a professional.
So I'm not sure really how this effects anyone, especially professionals who have or should have NPS. I once accidentally set a Canon mm f2. I brought the new "pairing" to Canon in Irvine, CA and they had both back to me and looking like nothing ever happened in just two days.
Maybe they felt bad for me and thought it was enough of a scare and panic to see my gear looking like that lol. I dunno what to say other than it was truly amazing service and I will always remember how important it is to have Professional Services membership and always buy their highest tier service!
I do feel bad for the mom and pop shops that rely on their parts and that Nikon Authorized logo on their website, etc. However Nikon is suffering and if they think they can pick up the slack and they can handle the amount of repairs, why let a middle man make money off of you? I have used Nikon's repair center in Melville for my D recall.
It took over two weeks which seemed excessive to me at the time. I have never used an authorized repair center so nothing to compare there. I am a bit surprised at the short notice Nikon is giving their authorized centers - it may make future small business partners wary of working with Nikon. This seems to be more of Nikon reacting to its dire financial results and looking at every possible source of income, which is understandable but maybe not the best move from a marketing perspective.
A previously staunch Nikon fan, I am currenty in the process of abandoning them and going for Fujifilm insdtead — I may still live to regret that … who knows?

I would strongly recommend calling them again and talking to a supervisor. F Forum M My threads. You may also like. Nikon D6: initial sample images. Nikon AF-S mm F2. Latest sample galleries.
