The Preamp , which creates the distorted or clean tone, has the eq in it. This part shapes what your guitar will sound like. The Poweramp , which makes it loud enough to hear. In the case of tube poweramps, they tend to add a bit of flavor of their own aswell, which is part of the reason why tube amps sound better when they're cranked up loud.
The Cabinet Combo amps have this all built into one box. An amp head is simply a preamp and poweramp built into one box, that you need to connect to a cabinet of your choice. Enter the axe-fx. This is just a preamp, but a special preamp that also contains alot of other stuff.
It contains about different amp models, as well as a load of other effects stomp boxes, eq's, etc pretty much everything you'd ever need. It also includes poweramp and cabinet modeling, which means you can plug it into headphones or a PA system, and it will sound like its going through a guitar cabinet. Say you have an axe FX and you want to play in a band. Well, you have a few options, the most popular ones are; 1. Plug the axe FX direct into the PA system. This means you'd need to use the poweramp and cabinet models in the axe fx, or your amp will sound like a box of bees.
Plug the axe FX into a poweramp and guitar cabinet and use it like a normal amp head. Think of it like this. Buy the axe fx, and you get not the exact amps tone, but about as close as you can get to the real thing in many cases, but instead of spending 10, dollars on heads, and you definitely cant just change amps in the middle of a set, you buy the axe fx or any amp modeler.

First I plowed through a bunch of the factory presets and played with adding FX blocks and tweaking them. Fantastic - this process was incredibly intuitive, and the FX sound just plain monstrous. Even building a harmony patch with the Diatonic pitch block was super simple and fast.
My first attempt at building a complete sound from scratch was to bring up the Euro Blue Bogner XTC to try to dial in my basic sound. I built a blank preset with amp and default cab blocks, selected Euro Blue and set the dials in the vicinity of what I use on the real thing.
No dice - what I got was nowhere close, and didn't even really have what I think of as the typical Bogner character. My next step was to capture an IR of my existing rig and put it into the cab block. This took about 5 minutes and was incredibly easy. This is impressive. I have zero doubt that the Axe-FX covers every possible FX need I can expect, and exceed my expectations for flexibility and sound quality.
I foresee a good bit of short-term work to build my library of IRs and amp settings, but right now my expectation is that this thing can do a lot more than I have been able to do with even a highly versatile amp like the XTC. This is beyond modeling or effects processing… this is the new standard for guitarists. The Axe-Fx completely and forever changed the way I look at guitar processing.
The new model takes everything I love about the old one to the next level. All of the FX sound richer and the new interface makes it even easier to use. My rig has a new openness and clarity and sounds so much better as a result. The quality of all the effects is superb. There is great depth and transparency, and excellent imaging that makes listening with in-ear monitoring a wonderful aural experience. The Axe-Fx is a tone generating powerhouse. It always delivers the goods. Mike Keneally and I both have them integrated into our live rigs.
We wanted to hate the Fractal. All that work formulating and honing the Metallica guitar sounds was going to be lost. It opened the door to way more options than we had ever had before. In short WOW. This is the best my guitar has ever sounded. It makes you sound a better player. It actually breathes… responds to the touch.
