Who invented koozies

There, it was quickly adopted as part of surfer culture. The best part? Instead of keeping cold out, the koozie keeps it in. Despite the myths surrounding the humble koozie, we do know a few things for sure. She suggested goose down as the insulator. Instead, the RCC produced the rigid cylindrical foam holders that characterized koozies in the 80s. By the early 90s, softer foam and neoprene had largely replaced rigid-walled koozies. But even this advancement comes with its share of difficulties.

To remedy that problem, someone invented a koozie that works like a slap bracelet to hug your drink — no matter its size. In , RCC let their trademark on the name lapse. More recently, scientists have taken a crack at the humble koozie. For homeowners, summer means intense outdoor lawn care and maintenance, capped off by a relaxing swing in a hammock with an icy brew. What do all these versions of summer have in common?

Name aside, the history of the koozie is as squishy and malleable as the product itself. Many claim that a beta version was originally introduced in Australia during the mids, where it became known as a "stubby holder" and was quickly adopted by surfers.

Others trace its inspiration back even further to the centuries-old English practice of knitting tea cosies in order to ensure pots of Earl Grey stay piping hot and charmingly twee over the course of an afternoon.

In more ways than one, the koozie functions as an inverted version of the tea cosy. Where the cosy is adorable, the koozie is unapologetically garish. Where the cosy keeps heat in, the koozie shields against warmth. Even with the advancement and development of koozies, people were dissatisfied.

Apparently, cans also decided to change in shapes and sizes, and therefore, koozies were not guaranteed to fit. To remedy this clearly huge problem, someone came along and invented a koozie that essentially operated as a slap bracelet to hug a can or drink regardless of its size. Things for the koozie got particularly interesting in when the RCC let their trademark on the name lapse.

As you can imagine, a legal battle ensued as a web-based koozie maker over using the name koozie in their company name. And, matters get more complicated because Bic, the lighter and pen company, happens to own the all-caps version of the name.

In recent years, koozies have also caught the attention of scientists who want to discover if koozies actually work. A team from the University of Washington put together a study to look into the matter. And the resulting article, which was shared in Physics Today, resolved that koozies help prevent canned drinks from warming up by stopping condensation from forming on the can.

All of this background history to say, koozies are likely way more important to others than you might have previously thought!
