Sandy soil will drain water quickly but clay soil will prevent water drainage and become soggy. So the second step to prepare your garden for planting every season, is to add nutrients back e. As they get wet, the clay minerals absorb water molecules and expand; conversely, as they dry they shrink, leaving large voids in the soil. Swelling clays can control the behavior of virtually any type of soil if the percentage of clay is more than about 5 percent by weight. Your email address will not be published.

I loved it and was my favorite place to live during my hubby's military career. The schools were fantastic and Northern Virginia at the time had the highest per-capita income. I mentioned the snow because there was a "tongue n cheek" article in the Star about the poor government worker trapped in DC and it was going to snow and the poor thing couldn't decide what to do, flee or stay the night!!
My other favorite were the drivers coming toward the beltway and not getting off on the correct off-ramp to the correct state.
Many times there would be cars backing up to get to the off-ramp, usually someone from New York! No offense to anyone from New York!! LOL And speaking of New York, we had only been in Virginia a very short time when we needed some minor welding done to something and the guy was going to charge us more because he thought we had a New York license plate. I read somewhere that the average adult needs sq feet of space to feel comfortable.
This includes space to move, store things etc. That would mean a family of 4 wouldn't need more than sq feet of space.
That number likely goes up when you account for poor layout or unusable space and the sheer amount of stuff people accumulate today. Our house is too big based on this logic but we bought it before we had kids and mostly because we saw the housing prices skyrocketing in our area so we bought the biggest house that we could afford, planning for a future family or if that didn't happen, planning to sell in the future and downsize to make a profit.
We paid to replace a roof for square footage we don't need. Heating for empty rooms and now replacing windows in rooms we don't need. The biggest waste of space is having a guest room. Most of our family is within 30 minutes from us so for the number of times we've had guests stay overnight, one of us could have bunked in together or slept on the couch. I'd give up a bedroom and ad another bathroom and a space to have exercise equipment!
Really , the only parameters are that the size fit with its surroundings , and yours certainly does seem to be a good scale relating to the rest of the room. See pic. I think the shades would soften the look a bit ,too. If you can put them on either side of the window, I wood use a larger live tree, potted and placed inside a large rustic basket in the CORNER to the right of your art. I like the tile that's up on the wall at least from what I can see in a photo. It's not what you planned, so it's your decision.
Soil that is too wet will clump and eventually dry into hard clods that will be difficult to break up. A rototiller can dig through wet soil, but it creates thick clods of soil that clump together instead of turning the soil effectively to improve aeration. Tilling when the soil is wet also can lead to a plow pan over time. Tilling or driving on wet soils causes compaction. Depending on how fast the rain came and how little residue was on the soil surface, a crust may have formed and some may want to till the field to break up the crust.
This should be avoided as the soil may be too wet to do tillage. The first step is to remove the excess water. Another tip is to add organic matter like compost into the soil to help with aeration and drainage.
Add a couple of inches of top dressing — composted materials or peat moss — and rototill it in after leaving it on top of the soil for a couple of weeks. Before tilling, test soil moisture by digging down to a depth of 6 inches. If the soil will not form a ball at all, then it is too dry.
Leave wet soils to dry for 3 to 4 days before testing the soil again. Water dry soils thoroughly and let the area sit for 3 to 4 days to reduce excess water, then test it once more. Your beloved rototiller, the machine that grinds soil into cake flour, creating a garden surface as smooth as a well-made bed, is often bad for soil.
Bad for soil means bad for plants.
